Galle

Galle is a city influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists from the 16th century. The most iconic landmark is the Galle fort and the lighthouse. The fortified old city was founded by the Portuguese. Later dutch expanded the stoned sea wall further during the time they occupied the area. It is also one of the Unesco World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka.


The city is best explored on foot. Surrounded by dutch colonial buildings, museums, antique shops, cafes and an exotic old trading port is something you must not miss. The most recent addition to the area is whale watching. Yes, the sea giants do swim not far from Galle city.


The best time to travel is December to March when the air is much cooler than the normal 30°C.
