Kandy the last kingdom of Sri Lanka is the gateway to the hill country. The Mahanuwara Rajadhaniya (Kingdom of Kandy)was the last Independent Monarchy of Sri Lanka, which came under the British in 1815. The beautiful city is located in the heart of the Island and is surrounded by magnificent mountains. At the heart of the city is Kandy Lake. One of the main attractions of the city.
Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. If you have ever seen a city that looks so good when it is raining, it is Kandy. Kandy Esala Perahara held in July and August is one of the main attractions. It is one of the best religious parades in the world.
Most visitors do spend a night in Kandy on their way to Nuwara Eliya and Ella. It is the second largest city in Sri Lanka. Many travelers buy Sri Lankan Handicraft, Batiks, and famous tea from here. Don’t miss out on Kandian cultural show, Kandian architecture, and especially the Sri Lankan tea.
Temperature is between 24°C to 30°C throughout the year. The best time to visit is from January to April. You will find very little rain during this period.
