Pidurangala Rock

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

The hike to Pidurangala takes about 60 to 90 mins. Of course, it depends on your level of fitness. You find this rock formation a few kilometers north of the Sigiriya fortress. There is less to see here compared to Sigiriya. But the view from the top is magnificent. It is almost like a viewpoint for Sigiriya.

At the bottom, you will find the Pidurangala Buddhist Temple and caves. As per the ancient chronicles history of the temple dates back to the 1st century BC. According to the chronicles, monks who were residing at Sigiriya were relocated to Pidurangala by King Kashyapa, before he built his fortress at Sigiriya.

Pidurangala is more of a nature lover's choice while Sigiriya is for history and culture. The best time to climb Pidurangala is during sunset or sunrise. During sunrise, it is socially less crowded. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and carry plenty of water.
