Polonnaruwa is about 2 hours drive from Sigiriya and 4 hours from Kandy. It is part of the Cultural triangle in Sri Lanka(Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa). This is a must-see location in Sri Lanka. The Polonnaruwa period is from 1055 to 1212 and was after the kingdom of Anuradhapura. Kings of Sri Lanka ruled from here some 800 years ago.
Polonnaruwa remains one of the most ancient royal cities in Sri Lanka. It is also a world Heritage site due to its historical value. You will still see the former glory of one of the most prosperous ancient cities in the world. Ancient relics still stand as a testimony to the former rulers of the kingdom of their greatness and discipline.
It was once used by Duran Duran in their famous song Say a Prayer in 1982. The reign of King Parakramabahu of Polonnaruwa was a self-sufficient kingdom. During his time he developed the irrigation system and agriculture of the kingdom. You will still see the great Parakrama Samudraya |(a huge man-made lake built in 1200 which anchored vast ships). The best way to travel around is by bicycle or a tuk-tuk.
The best time to travel is November to March when the air is much cooler than the normal dry high temperatures. Temperature is between 35°C to 24°C depending] on the month. December is much cooler.
Places to stay are EKHO Lake House, Siyanco Holiday Resort, Hotel Sudu Araliya, Tishan Holiday Resort, AgboHotel, Giritale Hotel, Honey Tree, Pharo Lake, and Monarch Residence.
