Sigiriya or the Lions Rock is an ancient rock fortress located in the central province of Sri Lanka. Because Sigiriya is located near Dambulla, most of the tourist stays overnight in either city. Both cities have major tourist attractions. It usually takes between 2 to 3 hours to climb up the rock and back down. The capital city and the royal palace were abandoned after the king’s death. Up until the 14th century it was used as a Buddhist monastery.
Sigiriya is another UNESCO World Heritage site in Sri Lanka. Some refer to it as the 8th wonder of the world. It is an architectural marvel. It is also renowned for its 5th-century well-preserved Pre-Christian frescoes.
Before you climb the Sigiriya rock, start with the courtyards and structures on the base of the rock. There are Tuk Tuk drivers in the area that will take you around the rock base. There are plenty of Guest houses and Holiday Resorts around the area for you to choose from. Don’t forget to try a ride on a traditional bull cart in the village area.
Another favorite site isPidurangala rock. A lot of visitors do climb the Pidurangala to witness the magnificent view of the area from the top. Which is second only to view from Sigiriya Rock.
Temperature is between 31°C to 33°C throughout the year. This region is warm and dry throughout the year. The best time to visit is May to September during the dry season.
