Sri Lanka's biodiversity and tropical waters make it a haven for wildlife as well as for wildlife admirers. Sri Lanka ranks among the top three to see blue, sperm, humpback, and Bryde's whales. There are tons and tons of krill in these waters, which whales love to feed on. There is also an annual migration of blue and sperm whales between the bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea along the coast of Sri Lanka.
Best time and place for Whale Watching
Marissa (December to April)
Probably the best beaches in Sri Lanka. Along this southern region within a few kilometers, ocean depth can reach more than 1 kilometer. This makes the whales swim so close to the coastline.
Kalpitiya (November to April)
Tourism is new to this area. Not as famous as other western parts of Sri Lanka. Hotels and guest houses do arrange whale and dolphin-watching tours. The trip starts early morning and can last for about three to four hours.
Trincomalee (March to September)
The Easter part of Sri Lanka is much quieter and calmer than the other parts. But it only takes about 30 mins boat ride off the coast of Trincomalee to meet the blue whales. Truly an unforgettable lifetime experience. If you are not up for a boat ride, you can head to Swami Rock to catch glims of these giant sea creatures. If you like to be in the water, 1km off Nilavelli beach is pigeon island, National Park. it is home to many types of live coral and sea life. If you are lucky you will get close to a whale.
